GET MONEY OUT OF POLITICS IN YOUR TOWN!

You may remember from my very first letter I sent to you back in October that we need to build a wave.

You’re doing it, and United Republic’s Get Money Out campaign is now over 300,000 strong. This is huge folks.

There’s another wave building too. Across the country, towns and counties are passing “resolutions” to get money out of politics and declare that corporations are not people. You can too.

LA calls on Congress to get money out.

Last week, Los Angeles did it. This is also huge. I mean, it’s LA right?! That place is massive and it’s made up of Democrats, Republicans, and Independents. It’s got everybody and they totally knocked it out of the ballpark on this one.

We have a window for us, the PEOPLE, to take what Los Angeles and others are doing, to OUR towns and OUR cities and demand they do the same thing.

I’m doing it too. I’m taking it to my county Board of Supervisors to argue forcefully why they should pass it.

Lobbyists have convinced Republicans to present environmental issues as coming from the Democrats and are, ipso facto, soft, weak, trivial, and unimportant because they do not make money. Witness Republican zeal for the Keystone XL Pipeline which has the potential to poison a major water supply in our mid-west agricultural area. [It only creates 20,000 jobs. And those are the high paying jobs.] President Obama has put off the final decision until 2013, but, yesterday Republicans passed a law attempting to force the President to act in the next 60 days. As leverage, they attached it to the tax cut extension so important to the 99% of Americans who were able to survive 2011 on the $1000 the tax cut provides. Democrats are fighting to get this tax cut for the middle-class while Republicans continue to refuse ending immediately the Bush tax cuts enjoyed by the TOP 1% who are so-called “job creators” who fail to create jobs. Senate Majority Leader, Sen. Harry Reid (D-NV) says “they don’t exist.” This blogger does not understand the workings of a “Republican conscious.”

Did the child’s difficult breathing in the video give you pause? Why is it that it falls as silent on the deaf ears of the Republican Party? Growing children and working adults need a healthy environment in which to flourish. It is the federal government’s job to safeguard the environment for us, our children and their children. The benefits of a healthy environment include profitable business which should be important to Republicans and the TOP 1%. Why do they let anti-environment lobbyists into their offices? Why do they meet them for lunch? What business is transacted among them? The hacking cough of the unseen child in the red carriage should echo in their ears until America is safe again for life and labor.

An Afghan woman whose plight gained international attention when she was imprisoned for adultery after a relative raped her has been freed.

The woman, identified only as Gulnaz for her own protection, had been sentenced to prison for 12 years after she reported that her cousin’s husband had raped her two years ago. Wednesday, she was free after President Hamid Karzai intervened on her behalf.

The woman is staying at a women’s shelter in Kabul with her daughter, whose father is the attacker. [QUOTE: CNN]

NAACP Petitions the UN Over Minority Voter Suppression

Since rising to power in state houses across the country in the 2010 midterm elections Republican legislators have been attempting to make it harder to vote by introducing an onslaught of voter ID bills. These bills would require many to provide multiple forms of ID to cast votes, instead of relying on the systems that are currently in place. Although there has been no documented evidence of wide-spread voter fraud, many Republicans claim that the new measures are meant to secure the validity of the election process, but opponents think something far more sinister is at play: Suppressing the minority, mostly Democratic, vote.

To fight back against these voter ID laws, the NAACP has teamed up with other groups, such as the League of Women Voters to stop these measure from going into practice. This week the NAACP will petition the United Nations (UN) human rights council over what it feels are efforts to disenfranchise Black and Latino voters.

Republicans Want Keystone XL Pipeline So Much, Even Though It Would Only Produce 20,000 Jobs

Republicans in the Congress have been influenced(?) to push for the Keystone XL Pipeline ignoring environmental issues. The attached article reports that it would only create 20,000 jobs. Today Republicans hold the poor, the unemployed and the middle-class hostage for construction of this crude oil pipeline rather than pass the American Jobs Act which would produce 1 million jobs! Speaker of the House, John Boehner (R-OH) keeps repeating is lame lie that we have “job creators” due to the Bush Tax Cuts, the TOP 1%, who must not be required to pay their fair share of taxes BECAUSE OF ALL THE JOBS THEY ARE CREATING as part of the bargain behind passing the Bush Tax Cuts.

These phantom job creators are stealing money from the federal treasury with the blessings and protections of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY), Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) and Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA). Who or what exercises so much power over these Republican obstructionists that they fail the American people without compunction? We have 14 million unemployed voters who should have the good sense to VOTE DEMOCRATIC ACROSS THE BOARD IN NOVEMBER 2012.
